The Dinosauria - Herrerasauridae

Description

Ok, I'm starting a new series of drawings. The subject: the wonderful, often reduced to some kind of Transformers-like line of action characters, world of the dinosaurs. I'm going to post one pic for each family of dinosaurs, be them saurischians or ornithischians, maybe in relatively chronological order or maybe not.

Just like my first series, the Fashion Timeline, this one started as a one-big-pic project, being this a giant cladogram (or evolutionary tree). There are two reasons for my change of mind with this. First, the Fashion Timeline wouldn't have had the following it got if I had posted it all at once (the following was very very very tiny in internet scale, but it was big for me). Second, a dinosaur cladogram is a hellish task, a lot more complicated than I thought at fist, as a lot of data about the evolution of dinosaurs is purely hypotetical. There are a lot of holes in this goddamn tree (intriguing, fascinating holes!), and I'm not the one who is going to fill them with random nonsense.

I may fail in this because my knowledge about the topic is limited, but I'll try to represent real dinosaurs instead of action toys. This is, maximum respect for what I know that science knows today about each family represented. I don't give a fuck about how ridiculous you think a feathered Tyrannosaurus Rex looks, here you're gonna see a feathered member of the tyrannosauridae. We often forget that these creatures did exist, and we shouldn't judge their looks just like they're been designed by a bunch of suits from Universal Pictures. They should be weird, and anything new we know about them should be shocking. Any new data may change forever what we know about them, and we should be prepared and even willing for that. I want to keep the traits that make every family unique, even if I have to cheat a little with a pose, for example.

Of course, my style is quite clean and simple, so the challenge is, as usual, to try to represent the real dinosaur with a limited amount of lines and angles.

Let's start with the firs family of known dinosaurs: Herrerasauridae.

Hope you enjoy with this!

I'm looking forward to your dinosaur project. BTW, I don't believe T.rex had feathers but if it did, here's how I think it most likely looked with them: swordlord3d.deviantart.com/art…
